Officials need to assert themselves and stop being sorry for protecting America from the civil unrest that is dividing the nation, a senator from Texas said.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has urged all representatives to rise up and protect the country from anti-police protesters who have rioted, looted, and vandalized businesses, historical monuments, and places of worship.
“We need leaders, Sean [Hannity,] to stand up and defend America unapologetically as the greatest nation in the history of the world dedicated to equal justice,” he told Fox News’s “Hannity.”
The senator believes extreme “anarchist” protests, which have swept across the nation since Minnesotan George Floyd died in police custody on May 25, have no noble cause and may have committed acts of domestic terrorism.
“What the far left are doing, they hate America, this is not about social justice, this is not about equality,” he said. “Antifa is behind much of it and they are domestic terrorists. We need law enforcement to stand together to stop this terrorism, enforce the rule of law, and protect American citizens.”
Cruz was also skeptical about the group’s claims that destroying historical statues would stop glorifying black slavery from the Confederacy era.
“Look at these vandals that are tearing monuments down, they are trying to tear down [statues of former Presidents] George Washington and Thomas Jefferson—that is not about the Confederacy,” he said. “Last [time] I checked, George Washington was not part of the Civil War.”
Cruz does not believe the Democratic Party will be able to distance itself from the protests because some of its members are mentally unstable.
“Unfortunately, the Democrats have released the crazies in their party and they are going nuts—the violence we are seeing, the rioting we are seeing,” he said. “The Democratic Party is inflicted with Trump derangement syndrome. They hate the president so much that they are allowing the crazies [to have free rein.]”
Cruz gave the example of New York City Speaker Corey Johnson, who joined other Democrats in cutting $1 billion in local government funding for the New York Police Department (NYPD) and spending part of the money on community support services instead.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) responded to the decision by demanding even deeper funding cuts to the NYPD.
“I mean, NYPD, cutting $1 billion from their police department and AOC says it is not enough? That is crazy,” he said. “The consequence will be a lot more black lives will be lost, and a lot more white lives and Hispanic lives. You pull the police back and those, especially those who live in low income neighborhoods, are going to find themselves the victims of much more violent crime.”
Cruz believes the cuts have not only affected NYPD financially but also staff morale.
“I have spoken to a lot of cops in the last few weeks and they are down, demoralized,” he said. “You are seeing senior people leaving the force [and, as for] young people, what 19-year-old in his right mind would say I am going to be a cop? [Do] you think that is good for America that people are scared to be a police officer and keep us safe?”
He vowed to continue pressuring the Big Apple and other cities to increase funding for the police.
“I stand with the NYPD,” he said. “I stand for the men and women of law enforcement across this country.”
