President Trump says his admidnistration is watching coronavirus outbreak closely

President Donald Trump on Monday, Jan. 27, said the coronavirus outbreak is “strongly on watch” and his administration has offered China and its leader any help “necessary.”

“We are in very close communication with China concerning the virus. Very few cases reported in USA, but strongly on watch. We have offered China and President Xi any help that is necessary. Our experts are extraordinary!” President Trump wrote in a tweet on Sunday morning.

According to Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), the outbreak of the respiratory illness caused by new coronavirus has sickened 2,886 people and killed 81 as of 10 p.m. EST. Jan. 27, the majority of them are in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.

More than a dozen  countries have coronavirus infected people, with the United States confirming five cases of the newly identified virus as of Monday.

In an interview with CNBC last Wednesday, Jan. 22, President Trump also downplayed concerns surrounding the virus outbreak in China after the first documented case on American soil was announced on Jan. 21.

“It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine,” the president said.

Coronaviruses come from the same family of viruses as SARS and MERS. Symptoms for the strain currently moving around the globe include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath, which can progress to pneumonia. Little is currently known about this new strain of coronavirus, and the medical community has yet to develop a cure for it.

In mainland China alone, the number of infected cases increased to 2,825, prompting Chinese officials to announced on Monday the extension of the Lunar New Year holiday by three days to to “reduce mass gatherings” and “block the spread of the epidemic.”

However, the real situation in China may be more complicated as a viral video shows a Wuhan citizen risked his life by taking to social media to expose the pandemic in the city and call for help from the world.
