(CNSNews.com) - President Donald Trump is hailing "TWO BIG VICTORIES" in North Carolina:
Republican Dan Bishop won the special election in North Carolina's Ninth Congressional Distrct on Tuesday, with 50.7 percent of the vote to Democrat Dan McCready's 48.7 percent. Bishop received 96,081 votes, 3,937 more than McCready's 92,144.
According to The New York Times, "experts" viewed the race as a "test of President Trump’s clout in suburban areas" heading into the 2020 election. Trump won this district by 12 points in 2016.
And Republican Gregory Murphy easily defeated Democrat Allen Thomas in North Carolina's Third Congressional District on Tuesday, 61.7 percent to 37.5 percent.
The election results drew a response from both sides.
Tom Perez, the Democrat National Committee chairman, issued the following statement, saying Republicans should "fear" Bishop's victory:
Dan McCready ran an extraordinary race, and although the final outcome isn’t what we hoped for, he stood up for Democratic values and inspired voters across North Carolina’s 9th District. These close results in a district Trump won by double digits should send waves of fear through the Republican Party at every level. Dan campaigned on the issues that matter most to working families. From lowering health care costs to strengthening our public schools, protecting the right to vote, and fighting for the middle class, he puts the people of his community, not corporate profits and special interests, first. As a Marine Corps veteran, he knows what it means to serve his country honorably, and I have no doubt that he has a bright future.
This was an election that never should have had to take place, but Republicans plotted to tamper with the ballots in the last election. And while the GOP will no doubt continue to do everything they can to suppress the vote, especially in communities of color, Democrats will never stop fighting to ensure that the rights of every eligible voter are protected.
President Donald Trump, who led a rally for Bishop on Monday in Fayetteville, tweeted multiple times through the evening, as follows:
Greg Murphy won big, 62% to 37%, in North Carolina 03, & the Fake News barely covered the race. The win was far bigger than anticipated - there was just nothing the Fakers could say to diminish or demean the scope of this victory. So we had TWO BIG VICTORIES tonight, Greg & Dan!
@CNN & @MSNBC were all set to have a BIG victory, until Dan Bishop won North Carolina 09. Now you will hear them barely talk about, or cover, the race. Fake News never wins!
BIG NIGHT FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!
Greg Murphy is a big winner in North Carolina 03. Much bigger margins than originally anticipated. Congratulations Greg!
Dan Bishop was down 17 points 3 weeks ago. He then asked me for help, we changed his strategy together, and he ran a great race. Big Rally last night. Now it looks like he is going to win. @CNN & @MSNBC are moving their big studio equipment and talent out. Stay tuned!
The president also retweeted a message from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.): "Revolution not retirements. Congrats Dan Bishop and Dr. Greg Murphy!"
And Trump singled out CNN political contributor Alice Stewart, who said Tuesday night that Trump's policies as well as his support for Bishop helped in this election, and are likely to help again in 2020.
Alice @alicetweet Stewart: Thank you for the nice words while on @CNN concerning the TWO big Republican Congressional victories. You’d be great on a network with much higher ratings. Keep up the good work!
Dan Bishop not only thanked Trump in his victory speech -- he tried to call him.
"You all might want to hang around for this," Bishop said, as he pulled out his cell phone and called the White House.
Bishop reached Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, then a short time later Vice President Pence called Bishop to congratulate him.
"Under this president, America is great again," Bishop said. "We stand for our flag and we kneel for our maker."
