Uncle shot to death trying to protect niece who was being sexually assaulted in Illinois

A man was shot and killed Thursday night, Nov. 7, after trying to protect his niece who was being sexually assaulted inside a home in Burnside, according to Chicago police.
The incident occurred in the 500-block of East 89th Place at about 9:01 p.m. when the suspect gained entry to the home through a window, and sexually assaulted a teenage girl.
The victim’s 66-year-old uncle heard her screaming and rushed to help her when he was shot in the head and back by the attacker, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as James Lewis.
The teenager was taken to Trinity Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.
The suspect was fleeing the scene when he was taken into custody by responding officers. Charges have not been filed yet.
